Do you feel stressed more often after you’ve been using the computer? Maybe you get home and scroll on your phone for hours before bed. These are all signs that your eyes can be a source of stress for your brain.
Before I got my head injury, I had no idea how much my eyes affected my brain. It took many many migraines and a whole lot of therapy for my doctors and I to discover the problem was my eyes. After I was educated, and began really looking into eye therapy, I was surprised to learn that a majority of people don’t even realize how much stress is happening through their eyes. Everything from the fluorescent lights in commercial buildings to the sunlight can cause unnecessary stress on your brain.
This unnecessary stress can make a small shopping trip aggravating and draining. Even the amounts of colors we take in while shopping can overwhelm our brains. Things like blinking traffic lights, flashing of sunlight through the trees as you drive by, tail lights, commercial signage or even street lights can be overwhelming your brain without you even knowing it! Sometimes even the light of your phone can disrupt your brain while you sleep.
All of these culprits may be keeping your cortisol levels spiked and prevent you from losing weight. Reducing eye stress can also help to get rid of constant headaches or migraines.
How can you solve this problem and keep your brain calm with all of these things external stressors? One easy and quick way is to change your glasses. They are other ways to start loving your eyes as well. I’ve made a list of 20 simple ways to get eye relief fast.
10 ways you can reduce your stress and cortisol levels through your eyes.
1. Wear blue tinted glasses when outside.
Blue tinted lenses are great for any sort of sun glare. The blue tint shields your eyes from the harsh glare of the sun and its elements. Make sure you are wearing them anytime you go outside. If you don’t want to get special glasses for this, buy clip on ones for over your current glasses. You can even get blue tinted sunglasses to replace your old ones. The blue tint soothes your eyes and relaxes your brain.
They are good for driving in the snow or foggy situation’s too. There is a lot more glare from the reflection of the snow than you realize. That glare can be very harmful and painful to your brain. The blue tint provides protection against any reflective surfaces as well. A lot of cars and semi trucks have reflective surfaces that will shine in your eyes while driving. Wearing the blue tint will calm your eyes and your brain while you drive in any situation.
2. Wear rose tinted glasses when working with computers or electronic screens.
The rose tint soothes your eyes and eliminates the stress and strain on your eyes. These are perfect if you have to work with computers or any technological screens during the day. Make sure you are wearing them the entire day while you look at any screen. Wear them even when you are scrolling on your phone at night. Preventing the eyestrain will decrease overstimulation in your brain. Preventing this overstimulation is especially important to do before bed. Looking at a phone screen can really stress your body out before bed and prevent you from getting a deep sound sleep.
Make sure you aren’t having a habit of mindless scrolling right before drifting off to sleep as well. Put your phone down in the evening and find other healthy ways to destress before bedtime. Having too much phone stimulation before bed can really make it hard to get to sleep and stay asleep.
3. Wear Amber colored glasses when driving.
The amber colored glasses protect you from UV rays and relax your eyes. They filter out harsh light and enable your brain to relax while driving. The amber color produces a calming effect and makes driving a lot easier on the brain. There are a lot of overstimulating lights when driving. Examples are; any sort of flashing lights, headlights, traffic lights, neon signs. Etc. These amber colored glasses help reduce all of the glare and harmful effects those lights have on the brain. Chances are you will notice right away how much better it feels driving with tinted glasses.
Either the amber tint or the blue tint are suitable for outdoors. Choose whichever one feels best for you.
4. Get black out curtains for your bedroom.
Believe it or not, your eyes need a rest period just like your brain does at night. By simply blocking out all light at night, your eyes can fully rest and recharge for the next day. I bought black out curtains and never realized that there was so much more light entering my bedroom than the sun. The neighbors kept their outside lights on all night. There were so many different kinds of light hitting my eyes at night. Even when there was a full moon, that light would disrupt my sleep and I would feel terrible in the morning. Simply by adding black out curtains, I couldn’t believe the deep rest I got.
Not only were my eyes getting more rest, my brain was too. The eyes lead right into the brain. Any sort of light can disrupt your circadian rhythm cycle at night. Your brain needs to shut down fully and rest from all of the external stimulation in order to recharge. This disruption can play a significant role in hormone production and cortisol levels. By resting your brain and eyes fully, your hormones may start to adjust naturally. This will also help reduce cortisol production and help your menstrual cycles regulate!
5. Wear a dark colored eye mask at night while sleeping.
By wearing an eye mask at night, you are preventing the overstimulation of any lights in your eyes at night. There are so many lights that you don’t realize affect you at night. The blinking light of your phone, the blinking light of your TV, any little cracks in the curtains. All of those lights prevent your pituitary gland from regulating properly. This dysregulation can affect your hormones, cortisol levels, and prevent you from getting the deep sleep that you need.
The disruption of light at night can even disrupt your menstrual cycle. Believe it or not, by simply cutting out all lights at night while you sleep, you can quickly regulate your body and it’s natural cycle.
6. Adjust the lighting setting on your phone and TV.
If you get frequent headaches or have trouble sleeping, you might benefit from adjusting your phone setting. If you have a tendency to scroll on your phone a lot, this is probably a good idea. Change the settings to a dark background and a more softer Amberglow. Change the settings on your TV to a softer or less bright setting as well. This prevents overstimulation of the brain and relaxes your mind. Add in some amber or rose tinted glasses for an even more soothing effect.
7. Make sure you are up-to-date with your proper eyeglass prescription.
If your eyeglasses prescription is out of date, it may be causing a lot of strain on your eyes. This will definitely cause headaches, stress, and overstimulation of the eyes and brain. You may not even realize your eyeglasses are at fault! If you are more than 2 years past your last eye exam, it’s time for a check up.
Also be sure to make a check up if you are experiencing anything unusual with your eyes. Any excessive dryness, double vision, spots or migraines after reading. Anything out of the ordinary needs to be checked by your doctor.
8. Make a habit of wearing sunglasses.
If you are not wearing tinted glasses, the least you can do is make sure you are wearing sunglasses during the day. Make a habit out of wearing sunglasses even on foggy days. Any glare or UV light to your eyes can cause unnecessary stress and overstimulation of the brain. You may not even realize you’re getting stressed by simply being outdoors. These subtle changes to your eye care can make a world of difference.
Wearing sunglasses also prevents harmful UV rays from getting into your eyes and causing damage. Make sure you’re doing your part to prevent any further damage to your eyes now before it’s too late.
9. Take regular screen breaks.
If you have to sit at a desk all day long on the computer or you simply get lost in scrolling on your phone, taking breaks is a great idea! If you can’t remember to take breaks, set a timer on your phone. Even 20 to 60 seconds of a break can really make a difference! Add to that break an eye mask and some soothing sounds playing in some ear buds and you have the ultimate relaxation. Just don’t fall asleep at your desk!
This is also a terrific idea for a night time routine. A much healthier way to drift off to sleep and help your body regulate.
10. Treat yourself to a regular “spa day” for your eyes.
Use a warm, damp washcloth and lay it on your eyes when you are done with work and relaxing at home. This soothing effect can help the muscles and relax your brain. Make a habit out of relaxing your eyes every night after work. You can do this in the tub or sitting on your couch. This will also help you get a deep soothing night’s sleep.
Remember, every part of your body deserves to be taken care of and nurtured. You work so hard every single day. You deserve to care for your entire body and love yourself.
Make sure you are taking care of your eyes and your brain will thank you! With good eye care and healthy habits of protection, your brain will start feeling a lot calmer. Enjoy your new and much calmer life today.
