How to Sell Your Clothes for Extra Cash!
**As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
We all need extra cash. This year more than ever! Things are tight and stretched as far as they will go. Bills are coming in but there’s not enough to keep them going back out. I get it. Trust me, I’ve been there more times than I can count.
Sometimes things just can’t get any harder and extra cash is a means of pure survival. Sometimes you just want the extra cash to treat yourself. I mean, afterall, you deserve it!
Whatever your reason for extra cash, selling your clothes from your closet is a terrific and easy way to make extra money. I have been selling on Poshmark for a year now and am now a Posh Ambassador. (Thank you very much 🙂 I’ll show you how I did this with just a few hours a week!
Poshmark is a wonderful tool that takes a lot of the effort from you, enabling you to make no hassle sales very easily. You would not believe how much money is sitting in your closet right now!
First thing you have to keep in mind is that you won’t sell everything overnight. Before you find your groove, you’re going to want to list as many things as possible. So let’s get you started.
STEP 1. Download the App. You can simply click HERE and get started right away!
Fill out all of your information, add a profile picture and create a shop name.
**Make sure you have a correct address and payment information so that you can get your funds immediately.
** Don’t forget to invite friends, family and Facebook friends to do the same! You’ll earn cash faster this way.
STEP 2. Get your clothes ready to look their best to sell!
Don’t worry, I’m not saying you should wash everything and iron it all. That would be crazy time consuming. Although I do recommend washing the clothes before you ship them. That’s just courteous of your buyer and will earn you great ratings in the end.
I’m more talking about finding a place with good lighting for pictures. The pictures are literally EVERYTHING when selling clothes.
How do you get great pictures? It’s way easier than you think!
You could go out and buy lighting, photography backdrops and have an entire space set up. But you’re just starting out and who has the time and space for all of that right away?! Not me.
What I did was get a plain white sheet of poster board. You can get poster board for 25 cents or more. So CHEAP!
The best thing about using poster board is that you can tuck it away when you don’t need it and the white background really brings out the product details. Just look at this gorgeous necklace. It really pops against that white background doesn’t it??
Always edit your pictures! I use the app called SNAPSEED. I’m a freelance photographer so I really appreciate apps that are this amazing.
You can adjust the shadows, saturation, ambiance and lighting so easily!
STEP 3. What do I sell?
My answer is always the same, “EVERYTHING”. Everything in your home that you wouldn’t mind getting rid of. Kids clothes, your clothes, used and new candles, jewelry, mugs..etc. Once you start to sell items, you’ll see what is hot and what sits forever.
STEP 4. ALWAYS BE HONEST!
When selling on Poshmark, you are after great ratings. And to get great ratings you absolutely must be honest. If an item has a hole or stain, that doesn’t mean it won’t sell. But being honest beforehand will keep the buyer in the know early on so there are no surprises when they receive their stuff.
STEP 5. Be thorough in your description.
I personally have a preset description so that I can just copy, paste and edit for each item. It makes listing things so much easier. Do whatever works for you.
Mine look something like this.
- Generously Used or New (with or without tags.)
- Color
- Special attributes like glitter or lace.
- Size
- Designer or Brand
- Type of Fabric
- Length from armpit to armpit and from top to bottom
- Smoke Free Home
STEP 6. How much should I sell my items for?
A good rule of thumb for me is about half of the retail price if the item has tags or looks brand new.
A great way to check how much you should sell your items for is to check what already sold. I love that you can do this on Poshmark. Simply search for your item in the listings and set your setting for “SOLD ITEMS”. You can find this at the top of the search bar along with sizes, pricing and color.
This is a great and fast way to see what is selling and for how much.
Keep in mind that Poshmark takes about $3 per sale! This seems like a lot but they don’t charge to transfer funds, no hidden listing fees or selling fees and the shipping is always taken care of!
STEP 7. SHIPPING
When you make a sale, always package your items beautifully. Once again, you are after those good ratings. All shipping is paid for through USPS Priority mail. You can stop at your local post office and get flat rate shipping boxes for free! You can only use small or medium flat rate boxes though. And your item needs to be under 5lbs or you will have to request a higher weight when your item is sold.
Always weigh your items if you believe it to be over 5lbs.
Personalization also goes a long way. I have pre-printed Thank you cards that I add to every shipment. You’ll get those great rating and return customers!
STEP 8. What sells?
There are so many things that sell great on Poshmark but here is a list of items that I can never keep in stock.
- Victoria’s Secret Bras
- Under Armour and Nike Hoodies
- Sports Bras
- New Sneakers
- Uggs and Boots
- Miss Me and other special jeans
- Maternity Jeans and Shorts
- Bath & Bodyworks items of any kind! Even used candles.
- Yankee Candles
- Seasonal items
- New bathing suits.
- Leggings and Exercise Clothing
- Coats
- Starbucks Mugs and Cups
- Coach and Michael Kors purses
HOW CAN I MAKE SALES FASTER?
Once you have your shop all set up, chances are you have followers already. This is exactly what you want. To get more followers, you need to share their items from their closet.
If you see someone shared your item, go to their shop and share right back.
You want to get more and more followers. Sharing items will help you do this.
Another great thing to do is share your entire closet every night before you go to bed. That’s when the most people are online shopping and scrolling through their phones.
If you are searching for something that you want to buy, share or like it right away.
The best things to share are the items similar to yours. I have gotten a lot of sales from sellers that have similar items. We are all looking for new things to add to our closet that’s in our size!
How do Bundles work?
This took me longer to figure out than I would like to admit lol. It really can get confusing. But Bundling items is a great way to get a person to buy more from you. They don’t always take the bait but when they do it’s great!
So, if you’ve noticed that one person has like several of your items, you can make a bundle and offer them a discount. Chances are, they are waiting for that sweet deal from you.
So how do you do this?
Simply share each item to that specific person instead of all of your followers. If you don’t see them right away, type their username in “Search” and “Search People”. Once you find them, click on their name. Do this with each item they liked. It will automatically create a bundle.
Go back, click on your name to get back to your shop. (Bottom right)
Click “My Bundles” then “Sell”. You will see multiple clothing pieces under the person’s name. Click “View Bundle”. At the bottom right corner, you will see an “OFFER” button. You can make an offer and submit to the buyer.
The very last piece of advice I will leave you with is to place around with the app as much as possible. Buy some things for yourself! See how they package the items, remember what made you want to buy more and HAVE FUN!
I hope this tutorial helps you! Let me know how it goes and feel free to share your own tips!
